Why use lime in sludge treatment ?

Usually urban waste water "sewage" sludge is treated with lime to ensure a safe, easy and secure agricultural recycling without negative effects on environment.  Therefore lime has different functionalities :

  1. Lime plays an important role in sludge conditioning :
  2.

      • Flocks formation
      • Filtration aid
      • Obtention of a better structure, a better workability and better storage properties.

  3. Lime has an effect in sludge hygienisation :
  4.

      • Destruction of pathogens (bacteria, viruses and parasites).

  5. Lime decreases phosphorous in waste water.
  6.

      • Precipitates phosphorous of waste water in the dewatering sludge.

  7. Lime has an effect on sludge odours :
  8.

      • Prevention of bad odours due to sulphides and fatty acids
      • Formation of NH3
