Why use lime in sludge treatment ?
Usually urban waste water "sewage" sludge is treated with lime to ensure a safe, easy and secure agricultural recycling without negative effects on environment. Therefore lime has different functionalities :
- Lime plays an important role in sludge conditioning :
- Flocks formation
- Filtration aid
- Obtention of a better structure, a better workability and better storage properties.
- Lime has an effect in sludge hygienisation :
- Destruction of pathogens (bacteria, viruses and parasites).
- Lime decreases phosphorous in waste water.
- Precipitates phosphorous of waste water in the dewatering sludge.
- Lime has an effect on sludge odours :
- Prevention of bad odours due to sulphides and fatty acids
- Formation of NH3
